25th anniversary sparks fresh look at Jacob Wetterling mystery

The meeting took place in the summer of 2014 in the St. Cloud office of the Stearns County sheriff.

All of the key players were there: from the FBI and the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to Stearns County itself as lead agency.

The subject — Jacob Wetterling. The mission — to take another hard run at solving the decades-old mystery of what happened to the 11-year-old boy who was abducted by a masked man in the dark of an October night in 1989 and never seen again.

‘Hackers’ Blu-ray 20th Anniversary Edition Review: Angelina Jolie Hacks the 90s

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Hackers is the sort of film that was dated the minute it began production. From the music, to the costumes, to the tech, Hackers functions as a film of 1995 even more than something like Clueless, which is also celebrating its twentieth anniversary. That said the film, which has become a cult favorite, is thoroughly entertaining. Much of that may have to do with it now being a cultural artifact of what the culture thought computer hacking could or might be, but entertaining is entertaining. Jonny Lee Miller stars as Dade, who also goes by the hacker name of Zero Cool, and who starts the film being arrested for hacking at the age of eleven. Moving to New York with his mom, his ban from computers has finally been lifted, and of course he goes right back to hacking, coming in contact with the hacker “Acid Burn” online, and finds that he has competition. He also enrolls in school, where he quickly falls in with the hacker kids Joey (Jesse Bradford), Cereal (Matthew Lillard) and Phreak (Renoly Santiago), and quickly forms a love/hate relationship with Kate (Angelina Jolie) who is also a hacker. Joey is looking to prove himself and […]

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hackers at San Francisco’s DNA Lounge

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

JWZ, owner of San Francisco’s legendary DNA Lounge, writes, “Hey nerds, I think this might be up your alley. It’s the 20th anniversary of the movie HACKERS and we’re doing a movie screening, dance party, costume contest and Wipeout XL contest down at Ye Olde DNA Lounge.” “Hackers penetrate and ravage delicate public and privately owned computer systems, infecting them with viruses, and stealing materials for their own ends. These people, they are terrorists.” Can you believe that the movie Hackers was released twenty years ago? Neither can we, but we’re throwing a dance party to celebrate! We’re dressing up DNA Lounge as Cyberdelia, the club from the film (yes, we realize that’s not much of a stretch…) Join us for a screening of the movie at 8pm, followed by a dance party featuring only early 90s electronica! Also, we’ve installed an Olympic-sized swimming pool on the roof. Costumes strongly encouraged — are you more of an Acid Burn, a Phantom Phreak, a Mr. The Plague Sir, or a Joey? Join us for the costume contest at midnight, win cash and fabulous Hackers-themed prizes! Source: https://boingboing.net/2015/09/08/celebrate-the-20th-anniversary.html

Hackers – 20th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray)

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Since hacking became a thing, Hollywood has wanted to make movies about it. The worst of these movies regard hacking as some sort of magic, such as 2008’s Eagle Eye, in which a supercomputer hacks into a power line and somehow makes it physically fall on someone. Hackers was not only one of the first movies to tackle the subject, way back in 1995, but also one of the silliest, with director Iain Softley’s camera roving through the inside of a computer as if it were the Death Star trench and depicting a virus as a weird organism of keyboard characters that forms something resembling the tail of a peacock. Yet, 20 years later, Hackers endures in a way that Swordfish (Password Accepted) and Firewall don’t, because while Softley took visual license with hacking’s dullest aspect (people sitting at terminals and typing), he and screenwriter Rafael Moreu put effort into getting the culture correct. As a child, Dade Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller), handle “Zero Cool”, hacks into a Wall Street computer and causes a massive crash, which earns his parents a hefty fine and gets him banned from computers until he turns 18. When that day arrives, he’s just moved […]

Hackers And Its Mysterious Soundtrack’s 20th Anniversary

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

This week, Shout factory releases the 20th Anniversary edition of the film Hackers. You may remember this as the film starring a young Angelina Jolie and her real life future one-time husband Jonny Lee Miller as computer hackers, with a plot centered around saving the Earth thanks to a floppy disc and 28.8 modem. A classic of cyberpunk culture, and a definitely ’90s entity, there’s a lot about this film that makes it such a beloved one-of-a-kind entity. Among its unique charms is the curious legacy it carries thanks to its soundtrack. Yes, the ’90s was the height of motion pictures connecting with audience through a compact disc or cassette full of the same pulse-pounding and soul-stirring rhythms that echoed with the spirit of the film from whence they came. Existing at the exact nexus of marketing, merchandising and curated art, the movie soundtrack could spread the word about a film, as well break new artists and gave us some of music’s biggest icons’ signature hits. But the legacy of Hackers’ soundtrack is a little bit different. While the 1995 film eventually became a cult hit, the soundtrack which boasted an assortment of impeccably chosen electronic music like no other […]
