Single Mother Says She Was Arrested for Homeschooling Her Children

Single mother Kiarre Harris said she pulled her children out of public school last December, after fulfilling the requirements of New York State law. But in mid-January, she was arrested without hearing charges or being read her rights.

“Basically, I’m charged with neglect because my children are not attending a school that they’re not enrolled in,” Harris said in a Facebook video she posted on January 18. She mentioned an upcoming appearance in criminal court, where “I’m being charged as a criminal for contempt of the court for obstructing an order to have my children illegally kidnapped from me.”

It’s no wonder that Harris described the New York State authorities as “terrorists.

Retired child abuse investigator says DHS cuts would endanger children and vulnerable adults

Retired child abuse investigator says DHS cuts would endanger children and vulnerable adults

Statement by Senator Amanda Ragan of Mason City

“Iowans across the state are worried that Republican budget cuts will endanger vulnerable Iowans, children and dependent adults.

“Cutting the number of people looking out for children at risk is a mistake. We should not cut services to our most vulnerable Iowans.”

Statement by Bill Dickey, retired DHS investigator

I’m here to oppose mid-year cuts to Iowa’s human services budget, cuts that will be permanent. Those cuts would endanger children and adults who need our help. I say this based on my experience working for the Iowa Department of Human Services for 34 years. As a social worker at DHS, I was a caseworker, a supervisor of caseworkers, and finally as an investigator on cases involving children and adults, until I retired in 2014.

What We Are Teaching Our Children In The Election’s Aftermath

My mother loved to teach. She taught sixth grade reading for many years, but she was my teacher for as long as she lived. She taught me many things but her best lessons were the ones she lived every single day. I suspect that my children would say the same thing about me. We can tell our children and grandchildren how to act in certain situations but if we don’t model the behavior we want them to have it doesn’t matter. What we do is always more important than what we say.

This essay was framed and hung on the wall in my mother’s bathroom.
