District attorney’s office hires K-9 duo to help child abuse victims

The district attorney’s Bureau of Victim Services announced two unusual hires Monday to help support victims of child abuse and sexual assault.

New K-9 employees Skippy and Bert can be spotted walking around the downtown Hall of Justice with their handlers, Martha Carbajal and Ashley Meyers.

Skippy is a yellow Labrador retriever and Bert is a golden retriever and yellow lab mix.

Both are dubbed “facility dogs.” Unlike other K-9 teams trained to sniff out drugs, explosives and other dangers, facility dogs learn dozens of cues to help them work with victims of crime.

Scientific research shows that caressing an animal produces short-term decreases in blood pressure and heart rate and can also make people feel less lonely.

Man hires ‘court hacker’ on Craigslist … who turned out to be a cop

A Pennsylvanian bloke will spend two to four years behind bars for trying to hire a hacker on Craigslist to erase his court fines. Zachary Landis, 27, admitted to Lancaster County Court he tried to hire someone to illegally access court records and strike a $16,000 debt he owed for previous charges. That someone wasn’t a hacker – it was an undercover police detective. The would-be criminal mastermind posted an ad to classified site Craigslist seeking a cyber-genius who could break into the county court’s records system and wipe the balance of what he owed. According to ABC27 news, Landis used his personal email address and real phone number to make the post. Not exactly Danny Ocean, this one. The ad caught the attention of a detective who presented himself to Landis as a hacker. The two then corresponded about the planned network intrusion, during which Landis handed over the ID numbers of his previous convictions, and asked for a small portion of the debt to be erased as proof of the hacker’s skills before paying. Obviously, the police were able to trace the contact details and ID numbers back to Landis, and arrested him. On Wednesday last week, Landis […]

UBER HIRES HACKERS: UBER RESEARCHING SELF-DRIVING CARS BY HIRING THEIR OWN HACKERS TO TEST THINGS OUT

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Uber has hired hackers in order for them to conduct well-rounded research on their self-driving cars. According to the Wall Street Journal, Uber Technologies Inc. hired security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, who will work in the company’s Pittsburgh lab. They will be testing out some programs in hopes of making these potential self-driving cars successful — and safe. “Miller and Valasek caused a stir earlier this summer when they brought a Jeep Cherokee to a halt on a St. Louis highway by wirelessly hacking into its entertainment system. The stunt angered executives of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and the automobile industry’s trade group. But it played differently in Silicon Valley, where such security research is common. Tesla Motors Inc., for instance, worked closely with two other researchers who hacked one of its Model S sedans for a presentation at a hacker conference last month.” News that Uber hired the hackers to work for their company is getting mixed reviews. Naturally, as mentioned in the quote above, some car companies aren’t too happy with the idea of hacking tests. However, some consumers think it is important research that needs to be done, and that Uber has quite a remarkable […]

Seattle Police Dept. hires Amazon VP as top tech exec, promising more data-driven crime-fighting

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

The Seattle Police Department this morning named Amazon vice president Greg Russell as its new chief information officer — aiming to boost its technological prowess and improve its ability to use data to fight crime. Russell, 46, was previously an Amazon vice president overseeing areas including corporate applications, information technology and enterprise data warehousing. He starts at the Seattle Police Department on March 17, part of a broader management shakeup by Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole. In addition to overseeing the Seattle PD’s internal technology systems, Russell will be tasked with finding new ways of using data to track and predict crime, while balancing those capabilities with the privacy concerns of citizens. The department has been grappling with issues related to police body cameras, video disclosure, drones and other forms of emerging technology. “There will always be worries about what you’re going to do with the information,” said Russell in an interview posted this morning on the official SPD Blotter site. “If (you’re) transparent with how you’re going to use the information, and you make sure people can actually see it, I think most people will accept that.” Russell, a native of Scotland who lives on Bainbridge Island, became a U.S. citizen last year. He will make […]
