It started years ago, when at age 16 he bought his first computer, took it home and disassembled it. When he put the machine back together and it refused to run, a local big-box store tech guru taught the teen who would eventually take the alias “Wauchula Ghost” how to hack. Now he’s exercising those […]

U.S. military claims to be dropping ‘cyber bombs’ on ISIS

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

America’s military forces are dropping “cyber bombs” on Islamic State terrorist groups for the first time, Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work told reporters accompanying him on a military flight on Tuesday. The ISIS internet attacks, whatever the particulars really may be, are part of a stepped-up coordinated effort to put increasing pressure on the militant organization. “Those guys are under enormous pressure. Every time we have gone after one of their defended positions over the last six months, we have defeated them. They have left, they have retreated,” Work told reporters on a military plane en route to a Colorado air base. He said U.S. and coalition forces were putting pressure on Islamic State from all directions, using every possible military capability, including cyber attacks, to defeat the group. And that’s all the detail we have, which isn’t much. The US has begun waging cyber warfare against Isis, defence secretary Ashton Carter has confirmed. As the Financial Times reports, Carter said he has issued orders to the US Cyber Command to launch online attacks against the fundamentalist group. Speaking to the paper, he said: “I have given Cyber Command really its first wartime assignment…and we’re seeing how that works out.” He added: “Even a few years ago, it would not have occcured to a Secretary of Defence to say, ‘let’s get cyber in the game’, but here we have real opportunities.” Carter told reporters in February that the Cyber Command, which was formed in 2009, was “looking to accelerate” its digital attacks against Isis, in an effort to disrupt their communications systems, data security and financial structures. Now, it appears the cyber war is being stepped up. The US has only vaguely alluded to its cyber warfare operations in the past, but Carter’s comments are some of the most explicit confirmations so far that the US is deploying digital attacks against its enemies. “I have given Cyber Command its first wartime assignment” Ashton Carter, US Secretary of Defence Lifting the veil of secrecy which covers the Cyber Command, headquartered […]

Anonymous Is Hacking ISIS, But Warns Collaborating With US Government Is ‘Deeply Stupid’

The hacking collective Anonymous is battling ISIS online, but one of its most important voices has warned members that collaborating with the U.S. war on terror would be “deeply stupid.” The shadowy group issued a statement distancing itself from an offshoot, Ghost Security Group, which has been reportedly supplying the U.S. government with information about the Islamic State group in exchange for payments. The statement, which came from the highly influential @YourAnonNews Twitter account (1.6 million followers), included a thinly veiled criticism of Ghost Security Group: “We think it’s great if people want to hack ISIS and publish their secrets,” the group said. “But engaging in social media censorship campaigns and dealing with intelligence contractors and government agents is deeply stupid. The former will contribute to legitimize the spread of internet censorship and will lead to the increased censorship for everyone, including Anonymous.” Source: http://www.ibtimes.com/anonymous-hacking-isis-warns-collaborating-us-government-deeply-stupid-2226066

ISIS Twitter Accounts, IP Addresses Connected To British Government, Hackers Claim

At least three social media accounts belonging to supporters of the Islamic State group have been traced back to the British government, according to the hacking group VandaSec. The group, which is comprised of four male teenagers, says it discovered that the United Kingdom’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) owns Internet protocol (IP) addresses used by at least three jihadists to access Twitter accounts and conduct online recruitment and propaganda campaigns, reported the Mirror. The IP addresses, a type of unique identification number that is associated with every computer and mobile phone that logs onto the Internet, appeared to be based in Saudi Arabia, but upon further inspection, the hackers were able to trace them back to DWP’s London offices. ISIS to unleash TENS OF MILLIONS of jihadi hackers on West in blitz worse than NUCLEAR WAR

ISIS to unleash TENS OF MILLIONS of jihadi hackers on West in blitz worse than NUCLEAR WAR

The computer security expert, who invented the McAfee anti-virus software, claimed “fifteen to 25 percent” of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims are extremists, meaning ISIS could have an army of 400 million fanatical followers ready to strike at any minute.  Computer boffins at the terrorists’ headquarters in Raqqa have developed a secret smartphone application designed to spread Islamist propaganda and help followers carry out terrorist attacks from the comfort of their own homes. A team which may have included British hacker Junaid Hussain invented a feature which allows even the most computer illiterate of jihadis to launch sophisticated Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against websites. DDoS attacks work by flooding a site with fake traffic, causing it to grind to a halt, and have been successfully used against some of the world’s biggest companies and government departments. Experts now believe that ISIS hackers carried out a major test of the app’s capabilities last week by launching an audacious attempt to bring down the 13 root servers which keep the Internet running worldwide. Whilst the attack ultimately failed, it did temporarily slow down services across the globe and has been described as an unprecedented attempt to strike at the heart […]

ISIS Twitter Accounts Traced Back to UK Government by Hackers

ISIS Twitter Accounts Traced Back to UK Government by Hackers

Every computer and mobile phone logs onto the internet using an IP address, which is a type of identification number. The hacking collective showed Mirror Online details of the IP addresses used by a trio of separate digital jihadis to access Twitter accounts, which were then used to carry out online recruitment and propaganda campaigns. At first glance, the IP addresses seem to be based in Saudi Arabia, but upon further inspection using specialist tools they appeared to link back to the DWP. So, has the DWP been engaging in a little jihad after hours? The hackers believed so, saying: Don’t you think that’s strange? We traced these accounts back to London, the home of the British intelligence services. It is indeed strange. However, this appears to be more cock-up than conspiracy. The DWP claims they actually sold a swathe of IP addresses to Saudi Arabia in an unannounced deal that completed in October of this year. That is, the UK government sold IP addresses to an extremist group who used them to disseminate hate speech and potentially promote terrorism. Despite the astronomic proportions of this cock-up, a Cabinet spokesman remarked: The government owns millions of unused IP addresses which we are […]
