Precautions for small business data as Hacking leads to it.

An email hacker’s inroads into an organization that helps lead Downtown business may be enough of an alarm bell for the digital security of St. Joseph’s small merchants. The recent cyberattack launched against Rhabecca Boerkircher, executive director of the St. Joseph Downtown Partnership, mentioned her name but was actually a hoax. The ruse had Boerkircher supposedly unable to leave Kiev, Ukraine, because she had been robbed. The mysterious author purported a need for $2,250 to facilitate her return to St. Joseph. Boerkircher found out a quick response was necessary to get her computer back up and running on the heels of a determined hacker’s efforts. She likened the experience to losing a wallet. “You’ve got to get in there and change your passwords as soon as possible. It’s not fun,” she said. “It’s important to back everything up.” Tech Team, based in St. Joseph, stepped up with its information technology services and helped make those changes. Founders Jason Chase and Travis Hawkins are fully aware of the unrepentant attempts by criminals to gain the monetary high ground over their victims. Both men and their firm are steeped in aiding small businesses with vulnerabilities to various and sundry electronic data problems. […]

Crime Stoppers tip leads to credit card fraud bust

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Six men were arrested Wednesday in a credit card fraud bust by the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Economic Crimes Bureau. Police said a Crime Stoppers tip led investigators to arrest Sergio Molina, 50, Larry Milanes-Garcia, 35, Aldo Blanco, 33, Yoandy Alfonso, 32, and Michel Tenorio, 25. The five men were taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Another man, identified as Jorge Prieto, was arrested by federal agents and  taken to the Federal Detention Center in Miami. Investigators said 24 counterfeit credit cards were found in Tenorio’s car that were linked to Prieto. According to an arrest report, detectives searched the home of Molina’s girlfriend and found more than $300 in merchandise that Molina claimed to own. But police said the items were purchased with a counterfeit American Express card that was found at the home. Detectives said a text message from earlier in the day was discovered, in which Molina asked for 10 counterfeit credit cards from Alfonso. Police said the cards were later found at Alfonso’s home. Tenorio, Milanes-Garcia and Blanco were arrested at another home at 1805 SW 107th Ave, which police said was used to sell and store merchandise that was fraudulently purchased. According to police […]

Undercover investigation leads to child porn charges against Ford City man

An Armstrong County man has been arrested on child pornography charges, Attorney General Kathleen Kane announced Monday.

Shawn Kunkle, 44, was arrested Thursday by agents with the Attorney General’s Child Predator Section at his Ford City residence.

Kunkle is accused of possessing and distributing child porn using a peer-to-peer file sharing network, Kane said.

According to Kane’s office, agents discovered multiple video files depicting suspected child pornography associated with an IP address belonging to Kunkle during an undercover investigation in June.

Agents, along with officers from the Ford City Police Department, executed a search warrant at Kunkle’s residence and recovered two computers with several files indicative of child pornography, Kane said.

Cyber leads risks for insurers in North America, Bermuda

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Cyber risk is the top risk faced by insurers in North America and Bermuda, according to a survey released Wednesday by London-based think tank Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation. The survey, “Insurance Banana Skins: The CSFI Survey of Risks Facing Insurers,” found that among all global insurers surveyed, regulation ranked first among risks, followed by the macroeconomy and interest rates, with cyber ranking fourth. But for North America and Bermuda insurers, cyber risks, regulation and interest rates topped the list. Cyber is a new risk, having not appeared on the center’s previous “Insurance Banana Skins” survey published in 2013. “The most striking new theme to emerge from this survey is the high level of anxiety about cyber risk, specifically software failure and data security breaches,” said the report. “The chief concern is the security of the ever-growing volumes of data that insurers hold in cloud-based storage systems,” said the report. “For many, major breaches are inevitable; the question is how much damage they will cause.” “Cyber risk is the No. 1 banana skin for participants from nonlife businesses, as well as being high up the list for reinsurers and life insurers,” PricewaterhouseCoopers L.L.P., which sponsored the report, wrote […]
