Citizens Invited to ‘Stand’ against Child Abuse

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and GRADD’s Community Collaboration for Children and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services’ Department for Community Based Services invite you to help raise awareness.

CCC and DCBS are sponsoring “The Stand Against Child Abuse” on Thursday, April 17, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the side lawn of Kentucky Wesleyan College

Several activities for children are planned, including bounce houses, petting zoo, face painting, balloons, bubbles, a coloring station, and more.

This annual event helps bring attention to an issue that, unfortunately, continues to plague our nation, state, and local communities.

According to the most recent DCBS statistics, Kentucky Child Protective Services investigated 2,677 allegations of abuse/neglect of minors within Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster counties in 2016—including 1,187 cases which were substantiated.

Mormon leaders stand behind rules for gays, their children

The Mormon church is standing behind its new rules targeting gay members and their children that generated widespread blowback from members, while providing more explanation about them.

The rules issued last week are designed first and foremost to protect kids, following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ’s “tender love of children,” officials with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a news release Friday.

“Church leaders want to avoid putting little children in a potential tug-of-war between same-sex couples at home and teachings and activities at church,” according to the release posted online and written by the head of the faith’s public affairs office.

The “perfect victim” myth: How attempts to discredit rape survivors stand in the way of real change

Following the lead of a December piece in the New York Times, the Daily Beast and writer Cathy Young on Tuesday profiled Paul Nungesser, the man Emma Sulkowicz says raped her and is the reason she’s carrying her dorm mattress in a performance art and protest piece called “Carry That Weight.” There is nothing in Young’s story that the Times didn’t already cover, and both make essentially the same case: Nungesser believes he is a nice guy who was wrongly accused of rape and is now being bullied off campus by an avenging woman and her network of powerful supporters, including New York Sen.
