Florida volunteer boys basketball coach, attorney arrested for disturbing child abuse

Pinellas County Sheriff”s Office have arrested a man for child abuse and possession of child pornography.

On Oct. 20, detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit received information from the Pinellas County Schools Police reference a possible child abuse case.

The suspect was identified as 56-year-old Frederick T. Lowe, a volunteer junior varsity basketball assistant coach at Eastlake High School, and a real estate and criminal lawyer by trade.

The victim was identified as a 16-year-old male.

“This guy and this stuff is about as sick as it gets,” said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.

Through their investigation detectives learned that the teen was being mentored by Lowe at his home in Palm Harbor.

Former high school basketball coach faces child abuse, pornography charges

A former volunteer basketball coach at East Lake High was arrested Saturday on charges of child abuse and child pornography, the Pinellas Sheriff’s Office said.

Frederick T. Lowe, 56, of Palm Harbor is accused of abusing a 16-year-old student who was on the basketball team. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said in a news conference Saturday that Lowe is accused of making the boy strip and wear a diaper until he urinated on himself.

Lowe would then take off the diaper, smell it and wipe the boy’s genitals, Gualtieri said.

“This guy, this stuff, is as sick as it gets,” Gualtieri said.

Lowe and the boy met last summer through the basketball team, where he has volunteered as a coach for about two years, Gualtieri said.

High-school basketball roundup: Bapst’s shot in final seconds lifts Grove City

Grove City 42, Dublin Coffman 40: Nick Bapst hit a leaner in the lane with 4.5 seconds remaining and Grove City upset third-seeded Dublin Coffman in a Division I district semifinal boys basketball game at Marysville last night.

A driving shot by Coffman’s CJ Saunders in the final second was blocked out of bounds by Robbie Jobe. With 0.5 of a second placed back on the clock, Coffman’s ensuing inbounds pass was batted away by Kyle Laffin to end it.

Bapst scored 23 points to lead the 15th-seeded Greyhounds (17-8), who led for most of the way. Saunders had 18 for Coffman (22-2).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL: Norton puts on a shooting clinic to rout Rockland

NORTON – Routinely, the ball goes around and around as the Norton High boys’ basketball team looks for an open look and a better shot on the floor.

Sometimes, it can be confounding, passing up the first shot that presents itself, but the Lancers have the habits and the poise to be patient and rotate the ball. And so it was at a packed Larry Larocque Gymnasium Thursday night in the opening round of the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament.

The Lancers put on such a display of offense that they led from start to finish, carving out a 65-44 verdict over Rockland.

Ms. Reliable: Flint guard tops NCAA women’s basketball in free-throw shooting

FLINT, MI — Marquette senior Arlesia Morse said she shoots 100 free throws a week in practice.

Whatever she is doing, it’s working.

Morse’s name is at the top of the list among NCAA Division I women, with a 93.3 shooting clip from the free-throw line.

College basketball’s most accurate free-throw shooter has connected on 111 of her 119 attempts. That included a streak of 51 straight, during which she threatened the all-time record of 60 in a row.

“We have to shoot 100 free throws a week, and it’s just something I focus on,” Morse said. “I just get to the line, I focus and free throws win games.
