National Flight Academy plans first-of-its kind cybersecurity camp for Pensacola-area kids

Instead of swimming, surfing or horseback riding, summer camp for some Pensacola-area kids involves sitting in a room filled with computer screens and learning about cybersecurity. Students will practice writing computer code, encrypting messages and thwarting hacking attempts in a new camp planned by the National Flight Academy in July….

How to ward off homesickness, bullies and other problems that could arise at your child’s first sleepaway camp

The first time Lisa Fleming dropped her children off at sleepaway camp, she was a nervous wreck.

“I was so worried,” Fleming says. “I had a miserable week.”

Luckily, none of her fears were realized. “They had the most amazing week ever and were crying when we picked them up,” she says. “They didn’t want to leave their friends and counselors.”

This summer, she’s dropping off her 10-year-old son — the youngest of her three kids — at the same camp (Camp Quest Chesapeake, an educational adventure camp in Courtland, Va., about a three-hour drive from D.C.) with a lot more peace of mind.

FBI kids camp to teach cybersecurity ends with fake guns drawn, mock arrest

The FBI partnered with their local chapter of Infragard to offer a summer camp for kids. The middle schoolers who participated got a pretty unique first hand look at how the FBI solves crimes. The kids started the day with an exercise, specifically a fake kidnapping. FBI Special Agent Todd Berryman describes the scenario, “We […]

Camp Hill man charged with child porn; Embezzlement at nursing center: Overnight police report

Agents with the state Office of Attorney General’s Child Predator Section have filed charges against a man they say shared child pornography out of his Camp Hill home.

Trevor Logan Murray, 30, was arrested on Sept. 25 as part of an investigation into the online sexual abuse of children and was connected with the crime through pornographic images shared through a file sharing service, according to a news release from the office.

Agents made the discovery during a search of Murray’s computer at his Chestnut Street residence. An initial review of his computer files revealed “several images of suspected child pornography,” according to agents with the office.

Camp Hill raid ends with child porn arrest

Agents of the state attorney general’s Child Predator Unit raided a Camp Hill home Friday morning, making an arrest in a child pornography investigation.

An official at the scene in the 2300 block of Chestnut Street said he could not immediately provide other information. A spokeswoman for the AG’s office said only that she could confirm an arrest was made on child porn charges.

Camp Hill officials were on the scene and a special investigations truck from the AG’s office idled on the curb.

The house on the quiet residential side street was posted with orange placards. An official said it was being condemned as unfit for human habitation.

Chaos Communication Camp: Cyber pirates gather in Berlin for smart drugs, virtual sex, and the fight against global mass surveillance

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Quite how I ended up in a marquee an hour north of Berlin being sketched, stark b*****k naked, by some of the world’s leading digital activists and hackers is not entirely clear. There was a party at a London embassy, a drunken promise to help with an art project at “hacker Glastonbury”, and now, somehow, here I am, providing a little light entertainment before the campers get back to the important business of fighting the National Security Agency and teaching robots to mix cocktails. At the Chaos Communication Camp – the international hacking festival held in Germany every four years – almost anything can and indeed does happen. Organised by the Chaos Computer Club, the influential German hacker association founded in 1981, it has everything you might expect from a “normal” festival. Fantastical decorations, solicitous drug dealers and ear-splitting music abound. It’s the inter-tent Ethernet cables, low-flying drones, and workshops that cover everything from reverse-engineering sex toys, to hacking cars, to learning how to turn your own skull into a sound system that, by comparison, place all other parties somewhere in the Dark Ages. Preparing for CCC was a nerve-racking affair. “Assume that there will be many people at the […]

JCC camp supervisors warned last year about fired aide

Officials confirmed today that supervisors at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit day camp failed to alert senior management last summer after an employee expressed concerns about the same camp counselor who was accused by authorities earlier this month of abusing young children.

Michael Layne, a spokesman for the Jewish Community Center, said in a statement that they uncovered the disturbing information last Friday. Layne said the JCC is conducting its own internal investigation.

“In the summer of 2014, JCC camp supervisory personnel received a communication from a camp counselor which raised inappropriate conduct by the counselor who ultimately was charged with criminal wrongdoing,” Layne said. “The information reported was not passed on to senior JCC management.

Marin children learn fire safety, confidence at Novato fire camp

Fire Safety1It’s late Thursday morning, and two lines of young firefighters — donning helmets, gloves and fire-resistant gear — are obeying regimented calls bellowed their way: “Step! Step! Step!”

In sync, eight children, carrying two fire hoses, stride in unison toward flames shooting up from a metal structure fed by propane.

The fire they doused was intentionally lit and the firefighters were kids ages 10-14, participating this week in the Novato Fire Protection District’s annual Fire Squirts Camp.

This is the 13th year the weeklong camp at station 62 has paired Marin County youth, many of them at-risk, with firefighters and other public safety officials, in an effort to teach teamwork, self-confidence and discipline.
