Delhi police install cameras on patrol car doors to help in hunt for stolen vehicles

While Delhi Police have launched a slew of mobile apps for reporting crime, its South district branch has set up a new app to track stolen vehicles parked on streets. A special camera is installed at PCR vans which will register the number plates of vehicles parked on the streets. The camera is equipped with special software which will further match the data captured with the data of stolen vehicles. Though the project is launched on trial basis, soon the entire unit of Delhi Police will start using the app. According to South district police officials, this technology will improve the cops’ efficiency to trace stolen vehicles. Prem Nath, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District, told Mail Today that ‘Vehiscan’ is on trial run and things will be finalised after some time. “We have used this technology in various areas of Saket and Mehrauli where it performed effectively. Currently we are using it for stolen vehicles but soon it will be used to trace vehicles involved in other crimes as well,” he added. “Recently, we have started using this technology and successfully found five expensive cars stolen from various parts of Delhi,” a senior police official said. Delhi wants its women home before 8 p.m., while men can enjoy a slightly longer curfew, at least as per a new survey that has laid bare the city’s double standards.

Over 85 per cent of respondents said the head of their household was comfortable with an adult female member of the family being out till 8 p.m. or before. Whereas, a total of 72 per cent said the same head of the household was fine with an adult male member of the family being out till 10 p.m. and 12 a.

Sikkimese woman raped in Delhi; AIIMS doctor, 4 others arrested

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old woman from Sikkim, the wife of an army personnel, was trafficked to Delhi where she was allegedly raped by an AIIMS doctor in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas area on Thursday night. Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal gives Uber deadline for licence application

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt in New Delhi has set Uber Technologies Inc a February 25 deadline to provide supporting details for the online cab-hailing firm’s application to operate in the city. Uber was banned in Delhi in December after one of its drivers was accused of raping a female passenger. Last month, the company applied for a radio taxi licence and resumed operations, but its application has yet to be officially approved. In a letter issued to Uber on Wednesday and seen by Reuters a day later, the transport department gave the U.S. firm a “final opportunity” to submit within a week additional details to support the application, including on its call centre arrangements and proof that it has an office in the city. A government official said Uber’s application would be discarded if it did not comply by the deadline. “We can’t keep the application hanging,” the official said, declining to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media. An Uber spokesman said the company was “evaluating the deficiencies in its application in the time period provided by the government”. He declined to provide further details.
