Girl #Scouts fight #cybercrime with new #cybersecurity #badge

Source: National Cyber Security News

For the first time, millions of Girl Scouts nationwide are taking on hacking and cybercrime as they work towards earning newly introduced cybersecurity badges.

If you think being a Girl Scout is all camping, crafting, and cooking, think again.

For the first time, millions of Girl Scouts nationwide are taking on hacking and cybercrime as they work towards earning newly introduced cybersecurity badges. Girl Scouts of the USA teamed up with security company Palo Alto Networks to devise a curriculum that educates young girls about the basics of computer networks, cyber attacks, and online safety.

Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of GSUSA, said they created the program based on demand from the girls themselves.

“Protecting their identity online, how to protect themselves when they’re browsing, how to protect their computers, their family networks from being hacked, those are things that are of real interest to girls,” Acevedo said in an interview with NBC News.

In Alameda, California, Girl Scouts of Troop 32749 are already hard at work learning about the basics of coding and computer networks.

“Evelyn, you’re going to be my message sender,” said troop leader Danielle Zorn, holding an unruly ball of green yarn.

TENNESSEE GIRL SAFE, TEACHER ARRESTED NEAR CALIFORNIA CABIN

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — A 15-year-old Tennessee girl was rescued near a cabin in a remote part of northern California on Thursday, more than a month after her 50-year-old teacher kidnapped her and set off a nationwide manhunt, authorities said.

Health sciences teacher Tad Cummins surrendered to sheriff’s deputies without incident in Cecilville, California, hours after they had set up surveillance on his vehicle in the area, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said. The girl was apparently healthy and unharmed, and authorities said their main concern was her emotional and mental state.

“We couldn’t be happier to tell you she will soon be on her way back home to Tennessee,” Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn said.

14-month-old girl on life support after being shaken, police say

A 14-month-old girl is on life support after she was shaken, San Antonio police said.

Javiele Frias, 22, could face enhanced charges if the girl dies, authorities said.

Sandra Pickell, a spokeswoman for the San Antonio Police Department, said the child remained on life support as of Wednesday morning. Doctors said that they do not expect her to survive.

Pickell said investigators believe that Frias caused the baby’s injuries Monday evening.

They arrested him after answering a call for help at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Pleasanton Road.

Frias initially told officers that the child fell off a bed while she was in his care.

Former school teacher CLEARED of sexually assaulting a teenage girl on three occasions

A FORMER grammar school teacher has been cleared of sexually assaulting a teenage girl – on three occasions.

Colin Bell, 44, who taught at Westcliff High School for Girls, was accused of carrying out the assaults between January 1, 2013, and April 24, 2013.

Bell, of Rebels Lane, Great Wakering, denied the offences and has been acquitted by a jury at Basildon Crown Court last week.

The Echo can now report the verdict because press restrictions made in order not to prejudice a second trial Bell faced over indecent images of children have been lifted.

Following the verdict, Bell admitted a single charge of making an indecent image of a child and was handed an absolute discharge.

Teen girl arrested for planning school shooting

An 18-year-old student meticulously planned a mass shooting at her high school in which she intended to die, authorities in Maryland said Monday.

A shotgun, ammunition and bomb-making materials including nails and fireworks were found at Nichole Cevario’s home in Thurmont on Thursday, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said at a news conference.

There is no evidence that anyone else was involved, Jenkins said.

One of the teen’s parents notified Catoctin High School officials Thursday of a potential threat of violence and Cevario was removed from the classroom and turned over to investigators, the Frederick County sheriff’s office said in a statement. Cevario was later taken from the school to a hospital for an emergency evaluation and remains hospitalized, officials said.

Former teacher sentenced to prison for sex with girl

Daniel J. Brown was 28 when he started a relationship with a 15-year-old Genesee County girl.
When she turned 16, that relationship turned sexual, with Brown picking her up from school and taking her to various locations for sex.
He even entered the school and watched her perform in a play, prosecutors said.
Brown, a former teacher at Genesee Country Christian School in Geneseo, continued the relationship not only in Genesee but in Ontario County, where he lived.
The relationship ended with his arrest by state police in April 2016.
Friday morning Brown was sentenced in Genesee County Court for third-degree criminal sexual act as a result of a plea deal.
