#nationalcybersecuritymonth | Rochdale News | News Headlines | Internet savvy Whitworth girls reach semi-final of national competition

Three students from Whitworth Community High School got to pit their skills against other schools in the semi-final of a national competition held at PricewaterhouseCoopers office in Leeds.

Grace Campbell-Ousey, 12, Skye Wilkinson, 12, and Elizabeth Gack, 12, were selected for the second round of the The CyberFirst Girls Competition, set up by GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre.

The competition is aimed at promoting the industry as a career option to girls to increase diversity in the workforce.

Skye said: “The top 12 girls were split into groups of three for the first part of the competition which we completed online.

“We had four categories, networking, logic and coding, cryptography and cyber security, and we had a series of tasks at beginner, intermediate and expert levels.

“There was a lot of pressure and we had four hours, with a break for lunch, in which to complete as many tasks as we could.”

Both Grace and Elizabeth said they enjoyed the networking tasks best, but Grace said the cryptography was hard. Although all the tasks offered hints, they resulted in points being deducted if they were used.

Skye said: “My favourite part was speaking to the people who were running the competition and I learnt a lot from what they had to say.”

The competition certainly inspired Skye and Grace because they have both signed up for a development day workshop at a university in June and they are looking at computing careers.

Black members of Congress put pressure on FBI to investigate the missing black girls in Washington, DC that inspired a celebrity-driven social media campaign

Black members of Congress are demanding the FBI get involved in the search for a series of missing black girls in Washington DC, in a case that inspired a high-profile celebrity campaign.
Congressional Black Caucus chairman Cedric Richmond (D-LA), and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the District in Congress, wrote a letter Tuesday asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director James Comey get involved.
Their letter’s existence emerged after #missingdcgirls was tweeted by LL Cool J, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and Selma director Ava DuVernay, among others.

The letter, which was obtained by Associated Press on Thursday, called on Sessions and Comey to put money behind the search for the missing kids.

Man Who Preyed On School Girls Under Arrest

The Broward Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a man they say is a rapist who preyed on girls as they walked to school.

BSO spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion told CBS4’s Peter D’Oench that Kevin Smith was arrested after an exhaustive investigation and surveillance. She added detectives were gratified that this suspect is behind bars.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” she said.

Concepcion said Smith was “very brazen and bold” and said he might have continued his attacks if he was not arrested.

He appeared in court Wednesday after being arrested on Tuesday for sexual assault and two counts of kidnapping. He was arrested in Lauderdale Lakes near the scene of the reported attacks.
