Sydney lonely hearts fraudster gets three years jail for $2M swindle

THE Sydney lonely hearts fraudster who swindled about $2 million from lonely men she’d met through dating services has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars. Sanaa Derbas, 42, last year pleaded guilty to 11 fraud-related offences after tricking the seven victims into lending her money which she used to fund her gambling and cocaine habits, and to build a house. Between 2008 and 2014, the Sydney mother of four told the men she had a wealthy Egyptian grandfather but in order to receive his wire transfers she needed money for taxes, bank charges and solicitor’s fees. A cybersecurity taskforce chief turned child pornography collector seems poised to dodge prison – and live across the street from a Seattle elementary school.
Before agents arrived at his house across from Ballard’s West Woodland Elementary School, security consultant Brian Haller led the Seattle chapter of an FBI/private-sector group tasked with fighting computer crime and cyberterrorism. Haller had access to a secure FBI online platform and email system, though he is not alleged to have used either to collect child porn.
Haller was one of the smaller fish caught in an expansive FBI sting last year. Agents found the law enforcement insider used a “dark web” service – a Tor network site – to collect 600 files capturing the sexual abuse and exploitation of countless children.

$1.1 million fraud scheme gets N.J Women 7 years in jail

SOMERVILLE — A former Morris County Investment Adviser who pleaded guilty to organizing a $1.178 million Securities and Annuities fraud scheme was sentenced to seven years in prison Monday in Somerset County Superior Court. Janet Fooshee, 63, pleaded guilty in December to 31 of 37 charges contained in a pair of indictments brought against her in 2012 and 2013. The courtroom was packed with victims. Outside the courtroom, victims declined to comment, but one joyfully person said to a group, “It was great to see her led out in handcuffs.” The case was prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office and the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor. Fooshee was sentenced before Superior Court Judge Edward M. Coleman. Under the plea deal, Fooshee must also pay $415,000 in restitution to the victims, some of whom lived in a retirement community where she volunteered to be a bookkeeper. Her husband, Richard Fooshee, 64, an attorney, had pleaded guilty to second-degree charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and securities fraud. He was accepted in the Pre-Trial Intervention program.
