90% of kids abused online don’t speak out: Experts

Nearly 90% of children abused online are too afraid to speak out, keeping parents in the dark, say experts, putting the onus on schools to spread awareness on the need to report such incidents. At a panel discussion in the city on Monday, involving Unicef representatives, child psychologists and police, experts tracked the worrying rise in children being victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying.

Although the National Crime Records Bureau doesn’t have a separate category for cybercrimes against children, studies done in the past reveal a murky and apathetic virtual world. A 2014 survey found that one in three children and teenagers had experienced the pain of being bullied online.

Parents speak out against bullying policy

A few parents say it’s time to address bullying at the grade school. They say it’s a problem. So is the way it’s handled.

Several moms went to the school board meeting tonight. One spoke at length about the problems her daughter and other students have had with bullying. She wants the school board to examine and change the bullying policy, at least at the grade school level.

At this month’s school board meeting public comments came first. Amy Huskisson started her time with a story her 6 year-old daughter told her about a 9 year-old boy at recess.

She says, “He chased her down, wrapped his arms around her, and squeezed her as hard as he could to the extent that her face turned red, almost a purpleish color.

It seems kids grow up too fast in today’s world. With social media and news available 24/7 it’s hard to shield them from some adult topics that bring reality all too soon to their attention. School shootings, bombings, even political issues are becoming daily topics of conversations amongst adults, on TV and the internet. These are issues that your kids may hear and wonder about. They may be scared or confused, but don’t know how to talk about it. Here are some ways to speak about these adult topics to your children

Make sure your kids know they can come to you with any questions about any topic, no matter how sensitive it may be.

‘For God’s Sakes, Someone Speak Up’: Missing College Student’s Mom

The devastated family of Zuzu Renee Verk, a 22-year-old college student who mysteriously vanished in North Texas three weeks ago, is desperately seeking information on her whereabouts.

“Someone knows something,” Verk’s mother, Lori Verk, told The Huffington Post. “We just want to find her. For God’s sakes, someone speak up and tell us where to find our daughter.”

Zuzu Verk, a student at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, has been missing since Oct. 12. Police have named her boyfriend, Robert Fabian, 25, a suspect in her disappearance and say he is not cooperating in the investigation.

Lori Verk said her daughter was last seen on Oct.
