Small business targeted by Vodacom security solution

Vodacom Business has unveiled a security solution to keep employees’ smart devices and modems secure and threat-free. Housed on Vodacom’s core network, the SecureNet solution provides protection against mobile viruses, mobile malware and phishing sites when using non-encrypted communication. SecureNet also provides protection against e-mail threats, and ensures business devices are always protected, according to Vodacom Business. Vuyani Jarana, chief executive at Vodacom Business, says: “Smart mobile devices have quickly become an important part of businesses, especially with the era of bring your own device (BYOD). However, as more companies depend on mobile devices, cyber crime becomes an even bigger threat, with more potential for mobile viruses, mobile malware and phishing.” Small businesses are particularly vulnerable to fraud because of the limited resources to implement prevention systems. Mobile devices are quickly replacing the usage of laptops, and smart devices have taken over to house all the sensitive information any business deems confidential, Jarana adds. “Businesses don’t have to be exposed to cyber fraud that can’t be managed anymore. Vodacom SecureNet will save employers time and costs.” According to Kaspersky Lab, over 145 000 new malicious programs for mobile devices were detected in the last year, approximately four million malicious applications […]

Personal data of Maine school systems employees’ Targeted by Hackers

Unidentified computer hackers posing as a district’s school superintendent tried to trick multiple Maine school departments into handing over employees’ personal data, and succeeded in gaining confidential information in at least one case. The extent of the email scam came to light recently after Brunswick Superintendent Paul Perzanoski apologized to employees for mistakenly sending their W-2 forms, which contain tax data, to a fake email address. Acknowledging the hacking trick, Perzanoski said, “Last week, a hacker got into our system and posed as the superintendent. The W-2 forms were sent to the fake address but without social security numbers on them, as our employee was adept enough to feel uncomfortable about including them.” The school department employee who sent the employees’ W-2 forms to the fake email address said he thought he was responding to an email request from Perzanoski. But, the employee added he was suspicious enough to delete the affected employees’ Social Security numbers. Thus, any risk to their personal information appears to be minimal. Brunswick school system has more than 400 employees. The Brunswick Police Department and the school district’s technology department are working together to investigate the email scam. The attack may have occurred as early as last September. In October, UCLA Health administrators said they detected some suspicious activity and began an investigation with the FBI. Though at the time it didn’t appear that attackers had infiltrated the system, an investigation continued, and by May administrators found that the UCLA Health network, which includes the Ronald Reagan Medical Health Center, contains names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, Medicare or health plan ID numbers and some medical information that could have been accessed in the cyber attack. “We take this attack on our systems extremely seriously,” said Dr. James Atkinson, the interim associate vice chancellor and president of the UCLA Hospital System. “Our patients come first at UCLA Health, and confidentiality is a critical part of our commitment to care. We sincerely regret any impact this incident may have on those we serve. We have taken significant steps to further protect data and strengthen our network […]
