Hospitals must band together to beat hackers

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Consider this a rallying cry: Hospitals, health systems and networks need to join forces, organize, come together as a community, to proactively fend off hackers, hacktivists, organized criminals and other emerging threats all trying to penetrate healthcare entities to either steal patient data or, worse, destroy it altogether. This Love Hormone Could Predict Whether Mom And Dad Stay Together

Published: 02/11/2016 10:35 AM EST on LiveScience

A hormone known for its role in bonding and caregiving could predict whether new moms and dads stay together in the first years of their child’s life.

Researchers found a link between low oxytocin levels in the mother during pregnancy and shortly after the baby’s birth and the likelihood that new parents would break up by the time their child was 2 1/2 years old, according to the results, presented Jan. 29 at the annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in San Diego.

“What these data suggest is that lower Read More

Advances in technology help police, residents catch criminals together

Through online databases and the ever-increasing use of social media, metro-area authorities are relying on tips from the public to help them solve crimes more than ever before. This month, six law enforcement agencies announced their participation in a national database program that allows officers to track crimes, traffic accidents and other emergency calls by accessing an online map.   The program, called ATACRAIDS, allows officers to enter information into the system and share it with other agencies, helping investigators link crimes. Last week, the program went public, and officers in the six agencies (Oklahoma City, Midwest City, Edmond, Moore, Norman and Bethany police departments) are hoping residents will begin to monitor the database and pass along tips and information to authorities. Oklahoma City Police Capt. Paco Balderrama said his department is close to finishing another, more detailed database that will allow residents to track criminals convicted of sexual and violent crimes in their neighborhoods. Some law enforcement officials say they are optimistic about the ATACRAIDS program, given that the digital age has created a generation of individuals who understand technology and how to use it to solve problems. Sarah Jensen, spokeswoman for the Norman Police Department, said it uses […]

Clark Howard: Hackers, cyber security need to work together

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

to secure it. Channel 2 consumer adviser Clark Howard says companies and security researcher, more commonly known as hackers, need to work together to keep people safe. “The hackers are the ones finding flaws, finding cracks in the system before the criminals can find them and the hackers do the good thing, they alert the public the manufacturers they tell people about them so that those flaws can be fixed.” explained Beau Woods. Beau Woods, a security researcher and cyber security advocate, is part of a group called “I Am the Calvary. They work to bridge the gap between emerging technology and public safety. The recent Chrysler Fiat and Hospira medical pump hacks are perfect examples of hacker finding flaws in technology. In both cases researchers were able to remotely break into the operating systems. For Chrysler, it meant that hackers were able to remotely take control of a moving vehicle. In the case of the Hospira medical pump, they were able to control the dosage of medication given to a patient. Beau says there is no system that will never fail. “Every system has flaws, the earlier in the process you can find those flaws the less risk and […]

Def Con 23: Where PR stunts and hackers come together

Source: National Cyber Security – Produced By Gregory Evans

Having outgrown the odiferous corridors of the Rio, hacker conference Def Con entered this year by relocating to Bally’s Hotel and Casino — a venue described to me, in turns, by a Mandalay Bay hairdresser as “a shithole,” a taxi driver as “a punishment” and a Mandarin Hotel bar waitress as “totally haunted.” It turned out to be all that and much more. Def Con’s move to Bally’s and its adjoining property Paris allowed it to accommodate an estimated 20,000 attendees this year. And, like a goldfish growing to fit a big new bowl, the talks, expo, workspaces and hacking villages filled the vast ballrooms in each hotel to the limits. Lines for talks were long, and huge ballrooms were packed. In a time when stunt hacks garner headlines readymade for cartoonish CSI: Cyber plotlines, overhyped hacking talks were more overcrowded than ever; companies engaged in successful PR subterfuge on a bigger stage; and the U.S. government basically begged us to like it. It’s always twilight in a casino, so you couldn’t tell it was 6AM when a long line of hundreds wound itself down the Paris hallway with cash in hand, waiting for the first-come, first-served cash-only registration. This […]
